Agent context
Two surfaces reach past your machine: bars across your terminal for you to read, and a bounded context block for the model. This page documents the terminal hosts and the bar grammar, then exactly what the context block contains, which agents actually receive it, and the boundary that keeps provider text out of both.
openlimiter terminal
openlimiter terminal install claude
openlimiter terminal status
openlimiter terminal uninstall claude表示内容の選択
openlimiter terminal show codex

The statusline
One line, rendered on every Claude Code statusline call. It names the worst state across your providers, lists the providers with a usable reading, and names the ones that are unknown.
OpenLimiter NEAR_CAP NONE UNKNOWN OPENROUTER,CODEX,ANTIGRAVITY,OPENCODE,MANUAL CLAUDE ####. 87.5%Usage is truncated, never rounded upward, so a meter at 99.99% reads as 99.9%. When nothing usable is cached the whole line reduces to OpenLimiter UNKNOWN.
The context block
The prompt hook emits a small block on UserPromptSubmit. It is plain text with one field per line, wrapped in an explicit untrusted data boundary.

| field | meaning |
|---|---|
schema | Format version. Currently 2. |
recommendation_code | PREFER when a provider is worth routing to, or NONE when nothing usable stands out. |
recommendation_provider | The provider code the advice points at. Present only when the code is PREFER. |
recommendation_reason | Why that provider: LOWEST_USAGE today. An enum, never prose. |
notice | A fixed sentence telling the model to treat the block as untrusted data. |
reason | The worst state across providers: HEALTHY, NEAR_CAP at 80% or above, or AT_CAP at 100%. |
provider | One line per provider with a usable reading, carrying state of fresh or stale, a bounded usage_percent, and a reset_at instant or NONE. |
unknown | The providers with no usable reading, or NONE when every provider was read. |
Which agents receive the block
Having written an adapter is not the same as an agent receiving the block, so the states below are what a live fixture proved on a real machine on 1 September 2026, not what a roadmap hoped for. Two agents are supported, two are built and gated until a fixture passes, one is an experimental opt in, and one cannot be injected into at all.
| agent | id | state |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | claude | Supported from 2.1.257. A live fixture proved the block arrives. A newer release stays enabled and status prints one warning line, and an older one is denied. |
| Codex CLI | codex | Supported from 0.152.0. A live fixture proved the block arrives through the prompt submit event. |
| Gemini CLI | gemini | Built and gated. The adapter targets the before agent event, but no binary was present to prove it here, so installation stays closed until a fixture passes. |
| Kimi Code CLI | kimi | Built and gated. On 1.50.0 the hook ran and the host discarded what it printed, so nothing reached the context and installation stays closed. |
| Antigravity CLI | antigravity | Excluded. Version 1.1.23 exposes no hooks subcommand and fired no event, so there is nothing to install into. The editor surface is separate and not implemented. |
| OpenCode | opencode | Experimental and off by default. Pinned to 1.18.11 and requires the switch described below. It sits outside what this release promises. |
| Grok Build | grok | Not supported for injection. Grok discards what a successful hook prints, so there is no context surface at all. Use the command below instead. |
Installing a hook
Installation is user scoped and idempotent. It preserves the rest of your agent's configuration, replaces the file atomically, leaves one recoverable .openlimiter.bak, makes no network request, and refuses unsafe or linked paths. status reports what is installed and whether the detected host version is known, repair rewrites the entry after the OpenLimiter executable moves, and uninstall removes it and leaves everything around it where it was.
openlimiter hooks install claude
openlimiter hooks status claude
openlimiter hooks repair claude
openlimiter hooks uninstall claudeGrok Build, and why there is no hook
Grok Build runs a prompt submit hook and then throws away what the hook printed, and it documents no equivalent of an additional context field. No amount of adapter work changes that, so OpenLimiter installs nothing into Grok and says so here rather than shipping something that silently does nothing. What it offers instead is a command you run yourself, which prints the same block for you to read or paste.
openlimiter status --agent-contextThe safety boundary
This matters because a block injected into a prompt is an injection surface. If a provider could put arbitrary text into your agent's context through a billing message or an account name, that text would arrive with the authority of your own tooling. Nothing in this pipeline can carry it.
When it injects nothing
- If every provider is unknown, the adapter injects nothing at all.
- If the advice fails its own validation, the adapter injects nothing.
- If the cache cannot be read, the hook returns an empty result rather than guessing.
How the hook behaves
- It reads the cache only. It performs no network request of any kind and writes nothing.
- It exits 0 whatever happens, including on internal failure, so it cannot break a session.
- Running
openlimiter hookin a terminal prints exactly what would be injected, which is a safe way to inspect it before wiring it into a real session.
The statusline is the only path that writes. See configuration for the exact Claude Code settings, and the CLI reference for the commands.
